Boxing Gloves for Training, Bag Work & Sparring

Training, sparring and kids boxing gloves from Sting, Rival, Morgan, Zett and Onyx

Boxing gloves protect your hands and your training partner. The right pair depends on how you train: heavy bag and pad work, partner sparring, boxing fitness classes or junior training. A good glove keeps your wrist straight, your fist closed comfortably and your knuckles padded round after round.

We stock gloves from Sting, Rival, Morgan and Zett, plus our own Onyx range, from entry-level gloves for home and class training through to leather and microfibre sparring gloves for serious boxers, and kids gloves in 4oz to 6oz.

How to Choose Boxing Gloves

• Training vs sparring: all-round training gloves are built for bag and pad work; sparring gloves have softer, more evenly spread padding to protect your partner and are usually worn in heavier weights.
• Closure: hook-and-loop (velcro) gloves are quick to put on by yourself and suit most gym training; lace-up gloves give a closer, more customised fit but need someone to tie them.
• Material: synthetic leather is durable and easy to clean for regular training; genuine leather moulds to your hand over time and generally lasts longer under heavy use.
• Fit: gloves should feel snug over hand wraps, with your fingers reaching the end of the glove and room to make a comfortable fist.

Boxing Glove Weight Guide (oz by Use)

Glove weight (in ounces) is mostly padding, not hand size. As a general guide:

• 4oz to 6oz: kids and juniors.
• 8oz to 10oz: speed work on pads and the bag, and smaller adults. Pro bouts are typically fought in 8oz or 10oz gloves, with amateur competition weights set by the governing body.
• 12oz: the most common all-round weight for bag and pad work for average-sized adults.
• 14oz: bag and pad work for larger adults, or sparring for lighter adults where the gym allows it.
• 16oz: the standard sparring weight for most adults, and many gyms require it. Heavier adults often use 16oz for all training.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size boxing gloves should I buy?
Choose by use and body size: 12oz suits bag and pad work for most adults, 16oz is the standard for sparring, and 4oz to 6oz suits kids. Larger adults usually go up a size across the board.

Do I need hand wraps under my gloves?
Yes. Gloves pad the outside of your hand; hand wraps support the small bones of the hand, the knuckles and the wrist underneath. Use both every session.

Can I use the same gloves for bag work and sparring?
Many people start with one pair of 14oz or 16oz gloves for both. Once you spar regularly, a dedicated pair of sparring gloves keeps the padding softer for your partners, since bag work compresses padding over time.

How do I keep my gloves fresh?
Open them up and air them out after every session, wipe the outside down, and avoid leaving them in a gym bag. A glove and shoe deodoriser helps between sessions.
