The Sting Taipan Shin & Foot Protector is the flagship of Sting's Taipan MMA range: a full-length shin and instep guard cut from premium full-grain natural leather over a multi-layered moulding system, engineered to take the impact of checked kicks and knee-on-shin collisions in MMA, Muay Thai and kickboxing sparring without transferring the shock to the bone.

The moulded shell is anatomically shaped to the shin so the guard sits flat and doesn't rotate on contact, with an instep section that follows the foot for kicks landed off the top of the foot. Reinforced seams hold the leather and padding together through years of use, a high-performance lining keeps it comfortable against the skin, and the elastic heel and instep straps hold the foot section in place while two adjustable hook-and-loop straps behind the calf lock the shin section down.

Who It Suits

MMA, Muay Thai and kickboxing athletes sparring regularly, and anyone who has cracked or shifted a cheaper synthetic guard and wants the one that lasts. Size Chart

Sting sizes the Taipan by the length of the shin plate and the instep pad. Measure your own shin from just below the kneecap to the top of the ankle bone with the leg straight, then choose the size whose shin length is closest to that without being longer - the plate should end just above the ankle, not ride into the knee. If you sit between sizes, go up. Our Sydney showrooms have sizes on the floor to try.

Frequently Asked Questions

Strap-on or slip-on - which is better?
Strap-on guards like the Taipan give more padding, better coverage and a more secure fit for hard sparring, and are the standard for MMA and Muay Thai. Slip-on (cloth) guards are thinner and quicker for light drilling or grappling-heavy sessions. If you're checking kicks at any real intensity, strap-on.

Do they cover the foot?
Yes - this is a shin-and-instep guard. The instep section covers the top of the foot for kicks landed off the shin and foot, held in place by an elastic heel strap and toe loop. The sole stays open so you keep your footing.

Are they leather?
Yes - full-grain natural leather, which is what you're paying for over the T3 synthetic Python. It's tougher against the abrasion of shin-on-shin contact and lasts far longer, but it needs a few sessions to break in and mould to your leg.

How do I care for them?
Open the straps and air dry after every session, never in a closed bag. Wipe the leather with a damp cloth and condition it occasionally; a spray deodoriser for the lining. Keep them out of direct sun and hot cars - heat dries and cracks leather.
