The 500mm x 500mm x 20mm Light Grey Rubber Gym Flooring Tile is the small-format tile in our range - a quarter of the size of the 1m tiles, at 5kg instead of 13.5kg, but 20mm thick rather than 15mm. That combination makes it the right choice for the jobs a big tile is awkward for: tight spaces, balconies and patios, cut-heavy layouts around posts and equipment, and anywhere one person needs to carry and lay it alone.

Light grey is the colour that brightens a room. Where black rubber makes a small gym feel smaller, a light grey floor bounces light around, shows off the equipment and photographs well - which is why it's a popular pick for studios, PT spaces and home gyms that double as a living area.

Light Grey or Dark Grey?

Both are the same tile in every respect except colour, so this is purely about the look and the upkeep.

• Light Grey (this tile) - brightens the space, modern studio look. Shows dust and rubber scuffs more readily, so plan on a more regular sweep.
• Dark Grey - hides marks and dirt, lower maintenance, the safer choice for a high-traffic commercial floor or a garage that doubles as a workshop.

Plenty of gyms mix the two - light grey across the floor with a dark grey walkway, or the reverse - since they're identical in size and thickness.

Is a 500mm Tile the Right Size for You?

Choose the 500mm tile when: the space is small or awkward, you're laying it yourself, you need to cut around a lot of obstacles, it's going outdoors or on a balcony, or you want a small marked zone rather than a whole floor.

Choose a 1m x 1m tile when: you're covering a big open area. Past roughly 15 square metres, the 1m x 1m rubber tiles lay four times faster, have a quarter of the joins, and work out cheaper per square metre.

How Many Tiles Do I Need?

Each tile covers 0.25 square metres, so multiply your floor area in square metres by four, then add 5-10% for cuts.

• Balcony or small corner (approx. 2m x 3m = 6m²) - 25-26 tiles
• Spare room or PT space (approx. 3m x 4m = 12m²) - 50-53 tiles
• Single garage (approx. 3m x 6m = 18m²) - 76-80 tiles, at which point the 1m x 1m tiles are the better buy

Independently Tested & Certified

Our rubber flooring is independently tested and certified to European standards. Certificates are available on request for fit-out, tender and compliance documentation.

The EN 14041 and EN 14904 assessment covers slip resistance, water-tightness, shock absorption, wear resistance, rolling load resistance, electrical behaviour and content of dangerous substances - the characteristics a certifier, architect or facility manager will ask about on a commercial floor.

Why REACH matters: if you're fitting out a school, childcare centre, council facility or healthcare space, the SGS screening tested this rubber against 235 Substances of Very High Concern on the European Chemicals Agency candidate list and detected none above the reporting limit. A lot of cheap imported rubber flooring has never been screened at all.

Installation Tips

1. Prepare the area: the surface should be clean, dry, level and free of dust - concrete, timber, tiles and vinyl are all fine
2. Lay from a corner: butt each tile tightly against the last in a grid or brick-bond pattern - the bevelled edges close up into a neat join
3. Cut to size: a sharp utility knife and straight edge will do it - at 500mm the tiles are easy to trim around posts, drains and doorways
4. Secure if required: indoors, loose lay is fine in most spaces; outdoors or in high-traffic areas, use double-sided flooring tape on the seams and perimeter, or adhesive for a permanent fix
5. Outdoors: leave a small drainage gap at the perimeter and lay on a surface that sheds water - don't seal the tiles into a puddle

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Why would I choose this over a 1m x 1m tile?
Size and weight. At 500mm and 5kg it's easy to carry, cut and lay on your own, and it fits small or awkward spaces where a 1m tile would need cutting. It's also 20mm thick rather than 15mm. For a big open floor, the 1m tiles are faster and cheaper per square metre.

Does light grey show dirt?
More than dark grey or black, yes - rubber scuffs from shoes and dust show up sooner on a pale floor. It sweeps and mops clean easily, but if you'd rather not think about it, the Dark Grey is the lower-maintenance option.

Do the tiles interlock?
No - they're straight-edged with a bevel, laid edge to edge. The weight and the tight join hold them in place; tape or adhesive locks them down if needed.

Can I use them outdoors?
Yes. The rubber is waterproof and weather-resistant and suits patios, balconies, covered decks and outdoor training areas. Colour will hold up best in covered or semi-exposed spots rather than full sun all day.

Is 20mm thick enough for weights?
Yes for dumbbells, kettlebells, benches, racks and general training. For dropping loaded Olympic bars from height, use 30mm EPDM tiles in the platform area.

Is this a certified playground soft-fall surface?
No. It's a gym and activity floor - fine for play areas, kids' training spaces and school activity rooms, but it's not rated for critical fall height under the playground standard. If you need a compliant soft-fall surface for play equipment, contact us and we'll point you to the right product.

Can you provide compliance documentation for a tender or fit-out?
Yes. We can supply the SGS fire classification report (EN 13501-1, Efl), the EN 14041 and EN 14904 technical construction file, the SGS REACH SVHC screening report and the CE Attestation of Conformity. Contact us and we'll send them through.

Can I install over tiles or concrete?
Yes - any flat, clean, dry surface. Timber and vinyl are fine too.

Does it smell?
It's a low-odour, non-toxic rubber. Give a new floor some airflow for the first day or two.

What other colours are there?
The same tile comes in Dark Grey, Red and Green. Mix them for zones or checkerboards - they're all the same size and thickness.
