The usual story goes like this. Someone buys a bench and a pair of dumbbells, trains for three weeks, realises they cannot progress, then spends twice as much replacing gear that was never going to last. The equipment was not the problem. The order was.
A home gym is a build, not a shopping list. Get the space and the sequence right and every purchase after that compounds. Get them wrong and you spend the first year buying things twice. This guide covers what to sort out before you spend anything, what to buy in what order, and roughly what each stage costs.
This is the step almost everyone skips, and it is the one that determines what is possible. Four numbers decide your build.
Write those four numbers down. Every decision from here checks against them, and it takes ten minutes to save yourself a return.

Flooring is treated as an afterthought and it should be the first thing in the room. It protects the slab, protects the equipment, cuts noise for anyone else in the house, and gives you a stable surface to lift from. Laying it after the gear is in means moving everything out again.
Two main options for a home build. EVA foam interlocking mats are the cheapest way to cover a garage, easy to fit yourself, and comfortable for bodyweight work and mat training. Rubber tiles cost more but handle dropped weight properly, and if you plan to deadlift or drop bumpers, that is the one that matters. Our gym flooring range covers both plus astroturf for sled work.
Practical rule: foam where you move, rubber where you load. Plenty of garage gyms use foam across the room and a rubber platform in the lifting zone, which is cheaper than tiling the lot.
Your rack determines what you can train for the next decade, so this is the piece worth over-buying on. Three options, and they suit different builds.
Power rack or cage. Four uprights, adjustable safeties, and you can bail out of a failed squat or bench without a spotter. If you train alone, which most home lifters do, this is the safe answer. Our power racks and cages start around $450 for entry models and move into commercial builds past $1,000.
Squat rack or half rack. Two uprights, smaller footprint, lower cost. Fine if space is genuinely tight or you train with a partner. Portable squat racks start around $165, but understand the trade: less margin for error on a heavy single.
Smith machine or multi-function station. Guided bar path, easier to learn, safer alone. Worth considering if you are training around an injury or you want a machine that covers several movements from one footprint. Smith machines and multi-function stations both do this well.
If you are unsure, the power rack is the default. It is the one people keep when they upgrade everything else.
Two routes, and the honest answer is that most serious home gyms end up with both.
A bar plus plates is the most cost-effective way to move heavy weight and the foundation of every strength program worth following. Start with a quality Olympic bar rather than the cheapest available, because a bar with poor knurl and low tensile strength is unpleasant to use and does not last. Our Olympic barbell range starts around $100 for specialty bars.
On plates, the choice is between cast iron and bumpers. Bumper plates can be dropped, which matters for Olympic lifting and for deadlift work where lowering under control every rep is not realistic. Cast iron is cheaper per kilo if you never drop anything. The full plates and barbells range covers both.
Hex dumbbells are the workhorse, cheap per pair and effectively indestructible, but a full set eats space and money. Pairs start around $16 depending on weight. Adjustable sets solve the space problem and cost more up front, which is usually the right trade in a small room. Browse the full dumbbell range to compare formats.
Kettlebells earn their place for swings, carries and single-arm work that dumbbells do not replicate as well. Two well-chosen weights go a long way.
An adjustable bench is the highest-value single purchase after the rack, because it unlocks incline and decline pressing, seated work and rows from one piece. Flat-only benches are cheaper, from around $135, and adjustable models sit closer to $550. If you buy one bench, buy the adjustable one.
After that, accessories in rough order of usefulness: resistance bands for warm-ups and assistance work, a lifting belt once you are moving real weight, and plyometric boxes if your training includes jumps or step-ups.
Cardio is usually the last thing into a home gym and often the first thing regretted, because it is the biggest footprint per dollar. If you have the room, the question is which machine suits your joints and your household rather than which burns most.
Short version: a treadmill is the most versatile and the noisiest, an exercise bike takes least space and is kindest to knees, and a rower gives you full-body work and stores upright. The full cardio equipment range covers every option, and there is a detailed comparison of the machine types if you want to go deeper before deciding.
Nobody plans for storage and everybody needs it. Plates on the floor turn a 3 m by 3 m room into a 2 m by 2 m room, and stepping over gear is enough friction to skip sessions. Plate trees, bar holders and dumbbell racks from our gym storage range cost less than one plate set and make the space usable.
Indicative tiers for a garage build. Prices move, so treat these as planning figures rather than quotes.
| Tier | Rough spend | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Starter | $1,500 to $2,500 | Foam flooring, entry power rack or squat rack, Olympic bar, one plate set, flat bench, bands |
| Serious | $3,000 to $6,000 | Rubber platform, commercial-grade rack, quality bar, bumper plates, adjustable bench, dumbbell set, storage |
| Complete | $7,000 plus | Full rubber flooring, commercial rack or Smith machine, full dumbbell range, cardio machine, cable station, full storage |
If you would rather not assemble the list yourself, our home gym packages bundle the combinations that work together, and the garage bundles start around $1,495. Buying as a package usually costs less than the same pieces individually and removes the guesswork about what pairs with what.
A functional strength setup fits in about 2.5 m by 2.5 m with 2.4 m of ceiling height. That covers a rack, a bar and a bench with room to move around them. Add cardio and you want closer to 3 m by 4 m. A single-car garage is usually plenty.
Flooring, then a rack, then a barbell and plates, then an adjustable bench. That sequence means nothing gets replaced later and each piece extends what you can train. Dumbbells, accessories and cardio come after.
A workable starter setup runs roughly $1,500 to $2,500. A serious garage gym with commercial-grade gear sits between $3,000 and $6,000. Beyond that you are adding cardio, cable work and a full dumbbell range. Packages and payment options like AfterPay, Zip Pay and PayPal spread the cost if you would rather not buy it in one hit.
Power rack if you train alone, because the safeties let you fail a lift without a spotter. Squat rack if space is genuinely tight or you always train with someone. The power rack is the one most people wish they had bought first.
Yes. Bare concrete damages plates, transmits noise and gives no cushioning. EVA foam mats are the budget option and work well for general training. Rubber tiles are the answer if you deadlift or drop bumpers.
In a small space, yes. One adjustable pair replaces a rack of fixed dumbbells and costs less than the equivalent full set. Fixed hex dumbbells are cheaper per pair, tougher, and faster to switch between, so they win if you have the room and the budget for a full range.
You can train, but limit what you drop and keep the heaviest work over load-bearing points. Rubber matting is essential rather than optional. If you plan to deadlift heavy or drop bumpers regularly, a ground-floor slab is a much better base.
In-stock items dispatch quickly, with more than 500 depot pickup locations across Australia. Made-to-order commercial pieces run on a production lead time, so ask before ordering if you are working to a date. Take the four measurements, decide your tier, and buy the flooring and the rack. Those two decisions shape everything that follows, and once they are right the rest of the build can happen at whatever pace suits your budget.
If you would rather see the gear before committing, the racks, benches and flooring are all set up at our Bankstown megastore. Loading a bar on a rack tells you more in thirty seconds than any spec sheet, and it is the fastest way to avoid buying the wrong thing twice.
